Default 94 Civic speedometer problem

the speedometer/odometer has been working intermittently and there
seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it stops working. both
speedometer and odometer seem to die for periods when i'm driving and
then randomly start working again. engine light is not on so i don't
think it's a problem with the VSS. i removed the instrument cluster
today and i don't know much about the electric stuff but all of the
connections looked fine. i'm thinking it's a problem with the
speedometer head but i don't really want to pay a mechanic and i would
like some advice from someone who has more experience than i do. the
car has approx. 143,000 miles. thanks

I think that would rule out the VSS sensor, which is the most logical
starting point for a speedo problem. When mine went bad, knocked out
both.
