Smoke in the morning...
Blue smoke. A large cloud just after I start my 1990.
What do you think is the likely cause? I've got one friend who's suggested it might be worn valve guides. What am I looking at paying if it *is* valve guides? Any other thoughts? You don't mention the miles on the engine but I'll assume high since it's a
'90. I agree that there is most likely oil seeping into the cylinders when the engine is idle. Are you good about oil changes? What viscosity oil do you use? I've been told for my old 92 w/ 130k or so, 20w50 is best. Others may have differing opinions but my point is, there are alot of specialized oils / adatives out there including ones for high mileage engines. There are also addatives for cars that smoke. Have you tried these partial / temporary solutions cause the full / permanent solutions will be expensive in my opinion. Then again, if you're familiar with doing a valve job youself (assuming that is the problem) maybe it's not such an expensive problem. Keep us posted, eh? The mileage is actually not all that high, and I'd say that I've been pretty good about oil changes, but not great. Since it's summer here in beautiful B.C. (or near enough <g>) I'm going to try putting a heavier weight oil in it to see if it helps. As for doing my own valve job... we'll see. I have an audi A8 that does this, it's the valve stem oil seal, when the
engine comes to a stop on a particular cylinder and the valve is left open oil seeps into the bore, when you start it in the morning this oil is burned resulting in a puff of smoke. Mine only does it occasionaly suggesting 1 worn seal, I asked my mechanic what I sould do about it and he said nothing other than keeping an eye on the oil level, it's only a problem if the smoke continues after the initial puff. good news as a valve job on an 32 valve Audi V8 would require me to sell something expensive, like the house ) |
