Clutch noise

Recently I have been having a real hard time changing gears in my 93 xlt 5
speed. As the problem has gotten worse (very difficult to change gears -
double clutching helps a little) I have begun to hear a whining noise when
the clutch is engaged.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like it is time for a new clutch. Actually, the description sounds
like problems with the throwout bearing and similar symptoms occur when the
slave cylinder doesn't allow full release, but the solution is the same and
when you open it up to fix one thing you are money ahead to replace it all.
I had the slave cylinder problem, basically, after about 170K miles and it
was getting hard to sift into some gears. Replacing the clutch and
associated parts returned the shifting to like new (or better).
