Default Knocking Noise from fron of 156

When driving slow and coming to a stop or cornering I hear a definate
knocking noise from the front of the car. It sounds as though its connected
to the steering rack or similar. Anyone any ideas as to what it might be?

Sounds like the bushes. Common (ish) problem in the 156 IIRC

Hi David,
Sounds like the drive shaft joints worn to me. If you have a drive
shaft specialist near you get it checked out there. Here in the North
East we have a good one on Team Valley trading est. Gateshead. Who
fitted one on a Polo for my daughter, I think it cost her £65 total,
and took them only 15 minutes from start to finish. Plus they checked
the other side, and said that one was OK. [Strange for a garage, may
be they were honest too].

Mine were replaced at 12,000 mile service, covered by warranty! The noise
has now come back at 21,000 miles!

Do they usually go this quickly in 156s? I have never had the bushes changed
in any car before, even my 11 year old renault 21!

Well mine did! Started at the 9400 mile mark though!

I've not been that lucky but I've never had bushes changed every 5
minutes like I do now!

Rear bushes are just as bad. Mine failed MOT 15K miles ago and I'm sure are
going to fail again at MOT next week. Previous owner had them changed twice
before I got the car. Alfa really need to sort their rubbers out - front and
back. Interestingly I was reading about the new Mazda 6 the other day and it
sounds as though that car has a very similar suspension system. Bet it's more
reliable though!

I had my rear bushes done at 36000 miles. Just passed MOT at 47000 miles
- no problems. Perhaps I'm not driving it hard enough?!?

OTOH, needed new rear discs at 25000 miles

Just spoken to Desira here in ipswich and they have given me two guide
prices for the parts: £45 if its the top wishbone, and about £170 if its
the bottom. Which is it that usually goes ?? I'm hoping someone will say
the top ones...!?

You can replace the bushes with poly bushes. Apparently the give a slightly
harsher ride, but last a lot longer. Check out the thread below:
