I've posted in the past that I really do appreciate the work put into, and
content, of RSC, but it is *always* hit and miss when it comes to connection
speed. I dread using it most of the time. R.a.s is always fast and
everything is right in front of me.

:-) And no picture sigs on newsgroups, thankfully. No moderation either,
which can be problematic sometimes, but it also means less gag-worthy
c*ck-sucking, so it's a fair swap.

Newsgroups are a very efficient way to communicate IMO. I can download all
new messages while doing something else, then filter and speed read
quickly and easily. Searches via Google Groups are similarly painless if
you're careful how you phrase your search.

I just wish there was a similarly quick and painless way of searching
(multiple) forums, and -- even better -- a way of downloading new (text
only) messages for "offline" sorting & reading. I'd pay for something that
could manage that trick.

Whether most users would pay to access most forums is a different matter.
It's easy to appreciate something when it's free. Still, you have to hand
it to the guys who keep many useful websites running; they do a great job
even if I rarely use them.

Interesting, though, that when RSC is down it doesn't take more than a few
minutes for someone to come here and holler. There must be a few people finding
it useful

I find it reassuring that even though this group isn't anywhere near as
busy as it used to be, many people still seem to use it as a "hub" for
their sim news & chat. Old fashioned it may be for some, but reliability
has its advantages. A forum can go down or die if a single server falls
over somewhere. Newsgroups are like internet cockroaches... primitive, but
almost impossible to get rid of :-)

in spite of my earlier tongue-in-cheek, humorous remark and my
preference for RAS I find RSC quite useful. Folks were going out of
their way trying to help me over there with the GTR online crashes
when I whined about them. I guess it's more of a generation thing than
anything else.
