Is that 2.3L engine an enlargement of the 1.8L and 2.0L that was in the
Miata or is it a FORD engine? Anyone know?

It's a variant of the Mazda-designed MZR used in a number of Mazdas and
Fords, including the NC. No relation to the NA/NB engine, which is a
much older design and essentially can't be enlarged past 2.0.
