Default 1980 733i gearbox probs

My car has recently decided it likes going backwards only, not forwards.
Appears to be the gearbox, yesterday evening noted a long delay in pickup at
the lights, high revs, and a high temperature reading. Pulled over, and it's
practically boiling oil

Let it cool down, and now it doesn't go forward, no matter what gear it's
in. Happy to reverse though.
So now my car is useful for the trip from the front door to the letterbox,
rolling down, and reversing back up.

Seems a bit of a waste of petrol though...

Any advice?

Would this be a parts or replacement job?

Once a box has started slipping it's usual to do a complete overhaul or
replacement as the cost of the parts is less than the labour.

The front clutch pack has gone south, kaput, dead. Common failure on
that era ZF automatics. Needs a rebuild or replacement.
