Default Valve setting

I have a 66 bug with a 1776 cc engine. I know it has some sort of reground
cam, bigger jugs and pistons and headers. What I don't know is what gap to
set my valves at. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Mike

if you have alluminum pushrods stick to the stock 0.06....if you have
steel/chromoly pushrods(common in "highperformance" engines) i adjust mine
to a "loose zero"...that is, remove all the lash, but loose enough to still
spin the pushrod with your fingers....

Depends on what material your pushrods are. Stock pushrods are aluminum,
and they make the valve clearance shrink when the engine is warmed up.
So if you have stock aluminum pushrods, adjust the valve gap to 0.15mm
(.006") when the engine is COLD. It will be tighter when the engine has
warmed up.

However, high performance engines often make the alu sticks bend, and
the builder therefore replaces them with steel pushrods. Steel doesn't
expand as much as aluminum when heated, so they fall short when the
engine warms up.. and the clearance then grows. So if you have steel
rods, adjust them as close to ZERO gap as possible (Engine COLD), but
make sure they still spin freely when the valve is closed at TDC. If you
want to play safe, adjust them to the minimum gap you can feel or
measure. The gap will still grow much beyond .006, and they usually are
noisy.. but it'll work.
