This is where I am going to be a jackass and suggest the perhaps your left *front* indicator bulb is burned out, otherwise, why specify that it is only the rear that is flashing fast? |

I don't know about the 97 flasher, but it would appear that the 2002 flasher can be defective in a way to cause the problem. Of course in my case after buying one and replacing the original, I found out that it was not defective, I had just missed a high resistance in line plug connection. yep. it was the dirty bulb contacts. Thanks for the good read.
Left turn signal was blinking fast and the front turn light looked weak. Cleaned the bulb contacts (which had a thick layer of oxidation) and it works great. THANK-YOU.
