steering wheel makes scraping sound

hi all,
the steering wheel makes a scraping sound on my car,presumably against the
boss.
a mechanic friend tried spraying polish down the back,which helped slightly
but hasnt fixed it.
obviously would like to avoid removing the steering wheel.
anyone any ideas for what i can spray or do to it(have to be careful what i
spray cos of the plastic)??
