Default Dinan upgrade

I've got a 2001 325ci and I was wondering if anyone out there got the
Dinan upgrade with the performance chip. I was just curious if it was
worth the money to do the upgrade. I know there are other chips out
there but I'd hate to void my warranty. I mean is it that much of a
performance boost?
Any help is appreciated.

I don't think there's any chip out there that significantly increases the
power output of the engine. The inital state of tune of a modern BMW
engine is soo good that the tuners can't gain very much. As I recall Dinan
claims something like 12HP if you do the whole thing (chip, CAI, exhaust).
That winds up being some $225/HP. Whether that gain is worth the price is
something that only you can say.

That's not to say that the chip is a bad thing. It does improve the
drivability of the engine, and on a car with an auto trans the companion
trans chip is a marked improvement.

Don't waste your money with anything "DINAN" unless you are ready to spend
thousands.
Try the "Shark Injector". Go to:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/index.php and sign up. Do an archive
request for "chip" and/or "Chips". There is more than you will ever want
to know there at that forum.
Matt.

From everything I've seen on Jim Conforti's tuning chip it doesn't do any
better than the Dinan chip and it does have the disadvantage that it will
void your warranty. And the prices that I've seen for the "Shark
Injector" are about the same as the Dinan chip.

I agree with the above in part. For *newer* cars made after year 2000,
there really isn't that much difference between Dinan, Jim C, EAT and
others.

However, for older BMWs, especially those with OBDI, chips did make a
difference, sometimes substantial. Why? Because BMW use to tune their car
for the "average" driver using regular gas. Thus, a performance chip would
tune the car by advance the timing and adjust the fuel mixture for premium
gas. Today, BMW tunes its car for premium and thus is actually not really
necessary.

I also agree that Dinan is expensive. However, I will say that his
suspension systems are excellent as they are extremely comfortable. I would
highly recommend one for street use. Dinan tunes his suspension so that its
not overly harsh on the street, yet provides excellent handling.

What makes you think that the Dinan software won't void your BMW warranty?
It could. In fact any performance tuning could cause BMW to decline
coverage, if they could prove that the modification caused the failure.
Dinan offers to cover the failure IF the warranty work is declined by BMW,
AND you only use Dinan parts in that system... There are many horror stories
about Dinan failing to provide coverage. You all need to read the fine
print...

Dinan will not void the warranty on most of his items because that company
is an "authorized" tuner with BMW.

You should go to the Dinan site and read the warranty carefully.

It's NOT that Dinan work will void any warranty, but that Dinan mirrors the
BMW warranty that BMW would not. Obviously, BMW won't pay for warranty work
on other peoples parts, like CAI, chips, exhaust, suspension parts, etc. But
whatever the BMW warranty is for the specific part, Dinan will mirror that
warranty for their parts.

Dinan will also mirror the warranty on the entire car. Though maybe that's
just my dealer's policy since they are dinan dealers as well.
