Convertible owners know that keys are useless against any
jerk with a pocket knife.

Ignition switch on, starter button under the dash. No problem.

I wish my 1994 Integra GS-R had used a $100 programmed key.
It was stolen, stripped and torched in 2007,total loss, along with the
automotive tools I had in the trunk.
Those programmed keys are a great anti-theft measure.
Of course, there's really no reason for replacements to cost $100 or more.
that's just greed.

When I was in Vietnam in 1964, sometimes I would catch a ride in those
old red and blue Renault taxis.A few wires hanging down from beneath the
dash board under the ignition switch. They didn't need any steenkin keys
at all. They would twist a couple of wires together and hold another wire
against the other wires,,, those old smokey Renault taxis were ready to
go!

It doesn't take a genius to see that keyless entry and starting is the
future. I'd rather they just embed an RFID chip on me and never have
to deal with keys again.

At least partially true...I have a rather new Solara convertible.
I have no doubt that some scumbag would cut the top if he or
she saw a pack of chewing gum inside that could be stolen.
Now, whether he could start the car even once inside is another
story. I rather doubt it.

I have a 90 Reatta that usually wont start when I put the right key
in. It was a nice car but with so much electronics built into
it that it is chronically unreliable.

Tape the key under the dash, and have another non chipped key made. The
proximity of the chipped key to the ignition will let the car start with
a normal key. At least this worked on my brother's Explorer.

Or just find a dealer that doesn't put a 1000% markup on the damned
keys. At my dealer I got two extra chip keys for my truck for $8 each,
cut by the dealer and programmed by me.

RFID chips make the keys more expensive by about $0.50, scummy dealers
are the ones charging 1000% markup on those keys. I got my chip keys
from my non-scummy dealer for $8 each cut and programmed them myself in
about 10 minutes.

Default The $500 Prius car key....

A few days ago, in my local area, I saw on TV news a woman stepped into
a store for a minute, she left her two years old kid in her SUV and the
key in the ignition switch. While she was in the store, somebody stold
her SUV.When he discovered the kid was in the back seat, he parked the
SUV way over in another part of town.

Things similiar to that happen very often all over America.Dummies
leaving the key in the ignition switch. It only takes a second for a
thief to jump in there and get going. Those Dummies might as well put a
sign on their vehicle,,, Steal This Vehicle Please!

What's involved in programming the keys?

$500 for a $5 key is actually a 10,000% markup. 1,000% is modest....
