Default Cold Start sequence for VW diesel engine (Seat Toledo)

Does any own know the cold start sequence for 1997 (VW) 1.9 Diesel
engine from a Seat Toledo SE.
- Engine No: 1Y0698861
- Spares No: R000570
- The same engine is also used by VW cars but I'm not sure which.

From cold:
1. Trickle current when driver's door is opened and closed
(glow plugs).
2. Full current for a few seconds once ignition is turned on
(glow plugs).
3. Then no current.
4. Full current returns for appox. 3 mins once engine starts.
Until engine warms up.(glow plugs?)

Warm start:
As above but full power remains for less than 3 mins depending on how
recently the car was used.

I am trying to work out if the large amount of current taken during
the latter heating period (approx 3 mins) is "normal" or the battery (
which was old anyway) broke through normal ware and tear.
(I am assuming this 3 mins heating is for the glow plugs – it seems an
awfully long time.)

I had a flat battery and a burnt out fuse. I have been told by a car
mechanic that current should only heat the glow plugs for a few
seconds rather than a few minutes and the reason why the battery is
flat is because the glow plugs are heated for too long.

Also if any one knows where I can get a wiring diagram for this car
too.
(Haynes don't do a manual for this model)

Or if you know of any other cars that this engine is also used on it
would be a help – I could have a look in the Haynes manual for that
car.

Thanks

Turn the key on and crank it after the glow plug lamp goes out. From memory
the glow plugs will stay on after startup to help it run smoother. Also the
3 glow plug in the water jacket stay on to help get heat sooner. As to if
the plugs are sticking on... well I guess so but one would need to connect a
volt meter and see if they all go out after the engine is warm

So just to clarify – sorry!

You are you are saying it is normal for the glow plugs to remain on,
once the engine has started, for a few minutes, during a warm-up
phase, for smother running.

Thanks once again.

Also ,Once the car is started the alternator carries the load used by the
battery. Whether the glow plugs are on or not it will be enough.
