I could not agree with your more. The CIA just stated tonight that we are
in danger terrorist attacks, and something has to be done. I think we all
agree with that statement, however I don't see anything being done to make
our country safer. You have a point about the" Islamic physics experiment
". If they hit one of our cities with a bio or dirty bomb, those damn
politicians would still let those trucks keep coming right on in. Its just
a matter of time before trucking companies start figuring out the money they
can save, by getting rid of American truckers and replacing them with these
illegals. They wont have to pay benefits there already free to an illegal.
It makes me sick to see hard working American families get screwed like
this.

Nor did you mention that good ol' boy US truck drivers are regularly
getting caught hauling dope and getting caught up in all sorts of
trouble. Nor the fact that it's not at all uncommon for French
Canadians to be driving in the USA and they seldom speak English, but
they have been doing so for decades without any significant incidents.

Actually, as someone who used to own a truckin' company (can you claim
any *REAL* connections to the industry?) I've always been impressed
with the high quality of the trucks and companies that run to and from
the borders supplying the manufacturing plants. *NOT* the local
trucks, which you wouldn't see in the USA and which are more comparable
to what we have in rural areas of the USA, but their long haul drivers
are generally very professional and well trained and their equipment is
new and in good condition. Don't forget that Kenworth manufactures in
Mexico (Kenmex) and that Navistar produces most ot their products down
there. They also sell Volvo and Scania products down in Mexico that
you cannot even buy in the USA.

There have been a couple of very significant changes in federal regulations
and the trucking industry over the past couple of years. The changes give
every indication the feds are smoothing the way for American truckers to be
forced out of the industry and replaced with Mexican trucks and truckers.

First was the change in the hours of service, the first change in more than
60 years.

Under the old rules, drivers could drive for no more than 10 hours after an
8 hour break, and could not drive after being on duty for 15 hours. That
meant he could screw around the docks loading and unloading or be involved
in other duties, such as fueling the truck and checking the tires, for up to
five hours a day, but could also still drive for 10 hours before taking an
eight hour break. The 10 hour driving period could be broken up with
periods of time spent off duty, an hour off to eat lunch for instance, and
that hour spent at lunch did not go against his driving hours or on duty
hours.

Under the new regulations implemented last year, a driver may not drive more
than 11 hours after a 10 hour break, and may not drive after being on duty
for more than 11 hours. Those 11 hours on duty begin the minute the driver
starts work, whether doing a pre-trip tire and oil check or driving, and run
in one consecutive 11 hour period that cannot be broken up. In other words,
if a driver stops an hour for lunch, that is one hour he cannot drive, and
counts against both his on duty time and driving time. If he starts his day
at 0700 with a pry inspection, he must be parked again for a minimum of 10
hours by 8pm, no matter if he only rolled 1 mile down the road during that
11 hour time period. The new regulations basically cut 3 hours a day right
off the top of drivers' potential productivity, and in many cases it works
out to more.

The new rules this year are related to the hazardous materials endorsement
on the class A commercial driver licenses. The costs are going to vary from
state to state, but the changes in Texas added about $100 to the cost of
renewing a class A CDL if you want to maintain your hazmat endorsement. The
CDL renewal in Texas is $60, plus the new hazmat makes them about $160 now.
In some states the CDL is more, up to $80-$90 in some places, and I'm sure
the hazmat endorsement could easily push the cost of a CDL up to $200 or
more. Before this latest change, a lot of drivers had already gotten to
where they were letting the hazmat endorsement drop off their licenses.
When they are under a hazmat load, they get hassled a lot more by cops and
at inspection stations. A LOT more. Which is good. However, they are not
paid any more for pulling hazmat loads, and the extra scrutiny opens them up
to a lot more potential fines from a greedy government and really limits
creative time keeping they can do to squeeze out an extra 50-100 miles a day
at .36 cents a mile. I have talked to very few drivers that intend to renew
the hazmat portion of their CDL who otherwise would have because of the new
fees.

I'm sure the federal government would not be deliberately trying to push
American truckers out of the industry to make way for Mexican trucks and
truckers. It is all about safety and national security.

steals, or WHATEVER, it goes into the database. So when truck companies
get a new contract to move cargo for a shipper, the shipper very often
demands that the trucking company's drivers are certified by Recurso
Confiable.

So Mammal, get a clue. It's ok to say "we don't want no Mexican truck
drivers stealin' or jobs!" That's fine. That's understandable. But
don't pretend it's because of safety reasons. That's just plain ol'
