Default Twin clutch SMG

Read in this week's Autocar that BMW are at long last developing a twin
clutch SMG transmission. It will not be available for a couple of years,
though. Why has it taken them so long?

Maybe it is a copyright issue. Porsche has developed a twin clutch gearbox
for the 968 long ago and VW has just recently released the DSG (direct
shift gearbox) which also uses double clutch. Maybe they use patented
technology which they do not want to sell to a competitor?

Just drove a 6 sp DSG Golf 2.0TDi last week for the first time... the 120d
may produce more power and torque, but often didn't feel as responsive,
mainly due to the gearbox ( 6sp steptronic) I think.....( car had only done
83km too ). It was so smooth, yet so responsive, and changed almost on
command.

Is there any reason why the twin clutch gearboxes can't be used on more
powerful engines in the future..eg M5. As far as I know...the 3.2 Audi is
the biggest engine to use DSG...

Why do you need to know? Is it really important? Why did HDTV not come
around sooner? How come the 8 track tape superseded the CD? Why do you take
20 minutes to shower?
Why do people ask such stupid questions?

It must be larger, heavier and more expensive. But worth all of these.

More like the "tech" got included by mistake...he does struggle with concepts.

/daytripper (The "8-track superceded the CD"? Why wasn't I informed?? ;-)

If this question was used as the litmus test for television programming,
there would only be a couple of channels, and maybe a dozen TV programs, at
most. The vast majority of television programming is worthless drivel,
asking and answering questions that nobody needs to know, and few would care
about if they weren't rich, ignorant, lazy, bored, hypnotized, depressed or
all of the above. Sadly

Which brings us to your next question....

> Why did HDTV not come around sooner?

Because competition between corporate giants disastrously impeded the
adoption and ratification of industry standards. The standards war is STILL
being fought, at the 11th hour.

Of course, you know that instead of making better shows, they'll just pack
more crappy shows into the same bandwidth. Do you really want to see the
individual pimples on the faces of the faux combatants on the HDTV version
of Jerry Springer? I thought not.

> How come the 8 track tape superseded the CD?

So we could have badly-mastered inferior digital recordings on an
inconvenient and non-durable form factor.

> Why do you take 20 minutes to shower?

Because people don't like the smell of their own species in the wild.

> Why do people ask such stupid questions?

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
