Default 20% increase in BHP...with a resistor?????

There are people on ebay selling a 'mod' to increase the power of any
car.....seems this is just a resistor added to one of the sensors connected
to the ECU.
Has anyone with an alfa TS engine actually tried this (and willing to admit
it!!)....is it total ******** as I suspect, or does it really work?
Is it adjusting the timing or fuel/air mixture? What's the long term
effect....running lean/rich....failed MOT emmisions....knackered catalytic
converter....???

Correct

Exactly that. It probably will increase power over a specific range of
throttle opening, exterior air density and so on. OTOH it will very nearly
certainly decrease the overall drivability of the engine.

Quite possibly.

Look at it this way: If it was really as simple as putting a resistor in to
change the air meter readings, why didn't Alfa do it? There are good
answers to that question, which may have no bearing on *your* specific
circumstances, but I certainly wouldn't risk it.

Looking at the feedback for the ebay sellers, they are all selling a few of
these resistors (fixed or variable resistors) every day for an amazing
profit......what an excellent scam - I wish I'd thought of it!!!

I think Mr P.T. Barnum had something to say on this.

Take an arbitrary figure of 100BHP.

20% of that is 20BHP.
Now ask yourself...do you really believe that alfa would not have
'liberated' the extra 20 BHP that these gizmos claim they can provide.

Even the claim itself is unbelieveable.
A claim of 2% would be more realistic (if the system worked - and I have
absolutely no doubt that it won't)

You just do not get 20% increases in power without significant
engineering...

Do they give you a free 20% upgrade for your brakes as well?

only buy one if the dial goes up to 11. Ones that go up to 10 are not as
powerful!!!
