you should be able to find in your manual that it specifically says to use
ATF +3.
the dexron IIe isn't synthetic, it just has more additives than Dex II, and
is not designed for Chrysler's.

You might be able to find a Dex IIe bottle at an independent autoparts store
lurking around, or maybe even a Dex III bottle, it'll say what specs the
fluid meets, chrysler's isn't one of them

Not necessarily for -Mopar- blasphemy. I wouldn't recommend that
someone take a Yugo to Jiffy Goof.
Your friend chose to go for fast food, he (and you) shouldn't be
surprised that a belly ache ensued. I (on the other hand,) am
past the point of astonishment that people don't pay enough
attention to the goings on around them and continue to patronize
such poor excuses for auto service.
Top this all off with them (Goofy Boob) blowing smoke up yours
and his keisters that Dexron II and ATF +3 are interchangeable.

The pimpley faced teenaged staff wasn't a tip off that things
might go awry?

To my knowledge, Dexron IIe is not a synthetic.
Dexron III -might- be.

> What synthetics are III+ compatible

ATF+3 is what is compatible. ATF+4 is also compatible and is a
(AFAIK) synthetic base stock with better properties than +3.
There are all kinds of synthetics that claim to be +3 compatible,
problem is, they claim to be compatible with many other
proprietary ATFs and such things (one size fits all) just isn't
possible.

His owners manual would be a good place to start.
The warnings stamped into the transaxle dipstick would be another.

I believe that in both places he'll find a recommendation to use
Type 7176 +3 fluid.
It may also say that Dexron II is allowed for topping off
purposes, but topping off is not the same as a re-fill after a
flush. Topping off to me means a pint or less.
Dexron II is Dexron II. ATF+3 is ATF+3.
A tennis shoe is not a Boeing 747.

Your friendly Daimler-Chrysler type dealership should be able to
supply you with TSBs that address the Dexron -vs- ATF +3 debate.

The more i research this, the more confusing it is:

http://www.bestsyntheticoil.com/amso...nsmission.html
amsoil says its synthetic is ok for Chrysler

http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ....asp?product=6
valvoline says its product is mercon, dextron, and Chrysler compatible

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...Mobil_ATF3.asp
Mobile list a ATF +III which i thought was the correct stuff

http://www.chevron.ca/ProductsServic.../MotorOils.htm
Chevron says this:
it wasn't until 1997 that Chrysler owners' manuals no longer listed
DEXRON as an acceptable replacement. ATF+3 is suitable in any
application calling for ATF PLUS, ATF+2 or a Type 7176 fluid.

http://www.havoline.com/products/na/trans_md3.html

So is dextron IIE ok for a 1996 604?

http://www.quakerstate.com/pages/pro...nventional.asp
Has specialized fluids for III+

http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html
Alpar says:All Chrysler four-speed automatic transmissions* are very
sensitive to the quality of the transmission fluid. Only use the ATF+[3
or 4] in these transmissions. Do not use Dexron or Mercon.

Its hard to know what is all truth. How much different is a 1996 604
from a 1997 and up?

Bob

The $10 dollars that he maybe saved might now have cost him thousands in the
long run!!!!

I alway patronise my local Dodge and Pontiac dealers on my Durango and
Grand Am for the tranny and oil changes. Most the time its the same or
cheaper due to their sending me out coupons all the time for being a loyal
customer.

The $10 dollars that he maybe saved might now have cost him thousands in the
long run!!!!

I alway patronise my local Dodge and Pontiac dealers on my Durango and
Grand Am for the tranny and oil changes. Most the time its the same or
cheaper due to their sending me out coupons all the time for being a loyal
customer.

No, it says that it's compatible with ATF+, a spec that dates
back to the late 80s. We've since had ATF+2, ATF+3 and ATF+4 the
specs of which they make NO claim to meeting.

Just more scAmsoil smoke and mirrors.

Chrysler built millions of transmissions that do NOT require any
of the ATF+ fluids. This fluid would be fine in any of them.

It is the correct stuff, it's an ATF+3 fluid.

Havoline Dexcool was touted as a 5 year 150,000 mile coolant when
it was first introduced. Cronic failures and problems not
anticipated have caused GM to reconsider the service life of
Dexcool and thusly shorten its recommended service life to that
of conventional green coolants.
Same goes here... Eventually, Chrysler got around to rewording
their owners manuals, but I can tell you that as far back as 1989
when the 604 Ultradrive transmission was introduced, Chrysler
went to great lengths to stress that only type 7176 ATF+ fluids
be used.
IOWs, things change, fluid recommendations change, fluid
recommendations for the 41TE transmission have changed a number
of times since its introduction in the 89 model year, but those
recommendations have always been towards the newer generations of
ATF+ fluids (+2, +3, +4) NOT backwards towards using ANY Dexron
spec fluid.

No, it is not. Dexron IIe is not ATF+ fluid.

They -have- ATF+3 spec fluid. I see no problem using it.
I -have- used it with zero problems.

Correct.

There are numerous changes which is to be expected given
continued quality improvement, but none of this negates the
importance of using the correct (ATF+) fluids in the 41TE and
41 LE transmissions.

ATF+3 or ATF+4 are the only acceptable fluids for the '96 Chrysler
automatics. Period. End of story. There is no Dexron fluid that is
"compatible".

Yank the dipstick out of the transmission; it says it right there.
