Default Wheels for 89 LX 5.0 with 93 Cobra Rear Axle

So to answer my original question for the benefit of others...

"Can I go with 17x8 sized for the 89 LX 5.0 and roll the rear fenders?"

I took the risk and got 17x8 front and 17x9 rear "Cobra R" wheels. They
fit with no modifications or clearance problems. At high speed on back
roads with big dips they scrape a bit but these are conditions that
cause any car to bottom.

FWIW I got the wheels from AFS on ebay with Kuhmo Ectsa tires, shipped
to my house, for under $800. The Kuhmos are great in wet and dry, and
made a big difference in autocross. Of course any 17" 40 series tire
would have been better than my 15s but I would buy the Ectsa tires
again. My only complaint is tramlining but no more than an Eagle VR or
any square-sided tire. Life is a series of compromises and that is a
good one.

I have 2000 GT rims/tires on my '89 LX. They fine just fine. I've also
done the 5 lug conversion.
