Default car wont start

i went to start my car, it started at first and i was able to back up, but
then i went to put it in drive and it kept going backward. I then put it
in first then second but it kept going backwards. Soon it went died. I
tried to get a boost off but it would not crank. the battery had plenty of
fire in it. whatever gear i put it in it still would be in reverse

I presume that you're talking about an automatic transmission?

If so, first I'd check the cable/linkage that connects the shift lever
to the transmission. I never owned an automatic miata, so I can't tell
you more than that. This could also explain the no-start condition as
most slushies won't start unless in park or neutral.

That fix is for standard trannies only though, right?
Also, wouldn't a standard still start again, because it only cares if
the clutch is depressed, not if the car is in any particular gear?
