Default My 2000 Ford Windstar has a "tone" coming from the engine compartment

I bought a 2000 Windstar LES about 2 months ago. I started hearing an
audible "tone" coming from the engine compartment a week or so ago. It
is louder outside the van than inside and it only seems to sound when
it is idling. It disapears when I give it gas but comes back when I let
off. It also only appears after the van has been driven for awhile then
shut off for a bit and driven again.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

In the case of my 1999 Ranger, replacing the IAC eliminated
the tone (Ford calls it Moosing I believe). FOrd has several
models where the IAC sets up a resonance in the intake tract
which sounds like some sort of deep woodwind instrument. On
some cars they actually changed the intake tract. At least
for me replacing the IAC (Idle Air Control) killed the noise
- at least until the IAC starts to get clogged again. I am
assuming a build up of deposits alters the IAC passages and
make a sort of whistle which is amplified by the intake
tract.
