Why passing on the right is dangerous
Because there are too many idiots on the roads who don't look before
changing lanes. Yesterday on I-17, LLB-ers in full force so I jumped behind a camaro that was also passing a pickup truck on the right. The pickup was totally oblivious to the fact that I was right next to him when he started to change lanes. He remained oblvious until I was halfway onto the shoulder and halfway in front of him. |

Not to disparage the many benefits of only passing on the left and KRETP in general, but it sounds like this is a case where you simply ran into a Carl Taylor-esque moron (complete with LLBing pickup) that didn't know how to properly use their mirrors when changing lanes. In the unlikely event that they bothered to check their passenger-side mirror or head-check before changing lanes, 10 to 1 says that the mirror wasn't properly adjusted outward far enough for them to see you alongside. -- ~/Garth |"I believe that it is better to tell the truth than a lie. They use this to justify their LLBing. Therefore it does not cross their mind that when they change to a slower lane, there might be someone in that lane going faster than them. Therefore they do not bother to head-check or check mirrors. It happens less when moving into a faster lane, as in that case it is to be expected that someone might be racing up beside you on that side. > > I should have said "Why giving driver's licenses to idiots is > dangerous" > Actually I was almost that idiot myself, one time. On a 2-lane road with little opportunity to pass safely, I was stuck behind some Indians going about 5 under the underposted limit, no other cars in sight ahead. Then we came to a passing lane. The indians moved smoothly into the passing lane. After honking and tailgating failed, I decided to pass using the regular lane. However, a car that was previously some distance behind me had also decided to pass on the regular lane (and was doing 30+ over the limit), I had stopped checking my mirrors for a while as I concentrated on the morons in front. Fortunately, my head check saved me from ploughing into him and taking out all 3 cars. |

In most cases, it's easier to notice cars to the left because the driver sits on the left side of the car. |

You've got a better angle for the mirror that way as well. It's harder to notice vehicles very close to you on the right. nate -- replace "fly" with "com" to reply. http://home.comcast.net/~njnagel |
