a $60 alternator repair probably saved him $400-1000 elsewhere.
Once the alternator diodes went into conduction, there was no way the
system would go more negative than their voltage drop of 0.7 volts or so
until they blew or the fusable link opened.

Think ECU if you want to think expensive. Add every single electronic module
in the car's electrical system if you really want to sweat.
