In last hour's Mythbusters on tv, Jamie and Adam tried out some ''fuel
saver'' gadgets. They didn't work at all.

What P.T.Barnum said.

The lock that keeps your spare key inaccessible from your teenager works
very well. Also the anti-siphon gas cap.

But I have a very effective fuel saver gadget. It's called a "tire pressure
gauge."

There has always been a lot of scamming in the automotive "improvement"
business, but it isn't often you see conflicting claims from different
products sold by the same retailer.

On page 41 of the March/April 2008 Summit Racing Equipment catalog ( a
mail-order house for those who do not know ) "The Tornado" is listed, along
with several carburetor and fuel Injection applications.

The ad claims....

"The Tornado is a stainless steel insert that adds spin to the incoming air
to help atomize fuel better, resulting in more complete ignition. You get
7-28% better mileage plus an increase of 4-13 horsepower...."

Page 327 of the same catalog, lists the "JET TPI Air Foils".

The ad claims.......

"JET's TPI Air Foils smooth out the air coming into the plenum. The lack of
turbulence increases airflow and horsepower throughout the power band."

So, if you mix the air up with a "Tornado", then smooth it out with a "Jet
TPI Air Foil", will your grocery-getter win the Daytons 500?

Most of these mail-order specialists tend to push one or the other.

Only Summit supports both claims - which ought to tell you a lot about the
claims and even more about the outfit selling this snake oil.

There are still supply houses out there that push the fuel magnets, claiming
certified
lab tests that prove it increases fuel economy...Ho hum
