Default Hesitation

I have a 2000 - 323i with about 63,000 clicks
When I aggressively step it down from a stop or traveling under 35mph or so,
I get a slight hesitation then service engine light comes on and runs very
rough. When I stop and restart the car problem is gone, till the next time a
step it down again. Anybody have any ideas before I take it to the stealer ?

You'll need to get the code read to be sure. If I had to guess, either the
cam position sensor or crank position sensor. My 740iL had similar symptoms
with the cam position sensor. Easy DIY fix.

You can go to Autozone, they'll read it for free. Otherwise Peake Research
(www.peakeresearch.com) makes a very good one that's easy to use and can
reset the oil service and inspection countdown.

BTW; for those who have similar symptoms without engine light coming on: I
noticed some similar hesitation w/ my '00 323iTA few years ago when the car
was couple of years old. I took it to dealer, and they said this was a known
problem that could be fixed with reprogramming ECU. They even had a name for
that, 'stop light hesitation'. I had mine reprogrammed under the warranty
and that fixed the problem.

The tech said they have been instructed to reprogram all E46 & E39 cars with
M52TU engine (320 (two liter), 323, 328, 520 (two liter), 523, 528) if
customer complains hesitation.

Pull the plug on #5 and check its condition. This site,
http://www.spark-plugs.co.uk/pages/t.../diagnosis.htm will give you an
idea of what to look for. Also check the voltage on the coil for that
cylinder. Its unlikely the coil would be bad at this mileage, but the plugs
could certainly be shot.

Open up the valve cover and pull off the coil for #5 plug. Bet there is oil in
the spark plug well. Means you need a new valve cover gasket, and probably a
new coil for #5. The oil has likely shorted out the coil.

When you pull the plug in #5 you may discover that it's fouled.
However, that may not be the end of your problem. I would also check
the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter.
