I ran a few laps at the 67 Spa track (which, if IIRC, was taken from GPL) and found that I was many seconds faster in the Ferrari than I ever managed in GPL. I also found that there was *way* too much steering input and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to dial it out of the setup. Even with castor turned down to about .5, I was really unable to hold the car in a straight line for any length of time, and the slightest wiggle of the back end resulted in heavy oversteer -- leading inevitably to the nearest fence or building. <sigh> I must admit that it might be the RealFeel FFB that could be throwing things off. I also should admit that I know diddly-squat about setups, although I can get a modern mod to at least steer properly (that's "properly" in my own opinion, of course.) I'd be interested in trying out any setups that anyone else has worked up... As it is, I just find it's too much work trying to keep the car going where I want it to. Maybe an online race would reinvoke some of that old GPL excitement though. -- Darryl |

I raised the ride height quite a bit because it was really twitchy if you touched a curb. It took speed well, and did 8:30's right out of the box on the full Nordschleife ring with only the ride height and gear ratio changes. I don't recall tweaking pneumatic trail to soften the response, but I might have. |

Adding caster adds straight line stability to the steering. Pat Dotson UltraForce Simulators LLC http://www.ultraforcesim.com |

OK, I'll believe you and try cranking the caster back up again. Can't make it any worse (I hope). -- Darryl |

SNIP -- Darryl I had to adjust my FF from -100 to +100 with RealFeel in the RF Options. Andi. |

If lowering caster made it less unstable for you, I'd say you have your FFB strength setting reversed per Andi's suggestion. Otherwise, increasing caster will always create more stability. I'll explain why it works that way just so you can believe me In suspension geometry, 'mechanical trail' refers to the distance that the contact patch of the tire follows the intersection of an imaginary line through the kingpin through the ground. The larger the mechanical trail value, the more of a stabilizing effect it will have on the direction of the tire. Increasing caster points the imaginary kingpin line further in front of the tire contact patch, which increases mechanical trail. For example look at the front end of a bicycle or motorcycle. Ever notice how the forks always either angle out in front of the head tube of the frame, or the forks will be bent forward near the front hub? Same thing - that increases mechanical trail which increases stability of the bike. Pat Dotson UltraForce Simulators LLC http://www.ultraforcesim.com |
