Default Buying a Honda in California

I live in Washington State. I found a Honda Pilot in So. Cal. for
several thousand less than here, so we are buying it and transporting
it up. Problem: the dealer says Honda requires us to register it in
California for a year. I've never heard of such a thing. Does anyone
know if this is true? My state will fine me $300 if it's not
registered within 30 days, so there this seems like crap to me.
