Default 96 Taurus Steering Column Lock Lever Actuator

This is the link between the lock cylinder and the ignition switch. It
seems - from responses received from other sources -that the easiest
way to replace it is to replace the steering column. Anyone here got
any thoughts?

Thanks in advance. BTW, I'm not doubting anyone elses valued and
appreciated opinion - just searching for more information before going
down the replacement route.
