I had a similar problem on my '97(same engine as yours)--would crank but no
spark. I removed and cleaned the crankshaft position sensor and replaced
the battery and it's been fine ever since. I think the problem was the
battery--enough voltage to turn the engine but not enough to get it to
spark.
