Default Bose Stereo System - Outrageous Repair Charge!

Three of the four speaker enclosures in my 1988 Corvette have failed. The
fourth sounds like it's beginning to go, as well. The local dealer tells me
that it will cost approximately $350 per enclosure to repair the individual
amplifiers in each enclosure. That is $1400 for the four speakers! For far
less, I can convert the entire system to Alpine and get a CD player as a
bonus. However, I would prefer to keep this low mileage gem all original.
Does anyone out in Corvette land know of a repair center that will fix the
Bose speaker enclosures for a reasonable price?
Brian

They are pretty easy to change. Try > http://www.corvettecentral.com/.
I bought a couple, left rear and right front, a few years ago and wasn't
upset by the price. But, the real problem could be the amp's in the
radio. I would check a radio or tv repair shop and see if they can test
your speakers before you spend the money for new ones. That's
experience talking! I finally replaced the radio with an after market.
Couldn't find anyone to fix the OEM.

Good Luck,
Glenn

This afternoon, I installed and Alpine system in my 96 Coupe for about 1/2
of your repair estimate. Mine isn't a "low mileage gem", or any "special
edition", so maintaining originality wasn't much of a concern. Because of
the Bose system quirks, I had the entire system replaced which involved all
new wiring. The sound improvement and having the CD player is worth the
cost. On another note, Ecklers has Bose speakers with amps for $139.99 each
for the Coupe and $119.99 each for Convertible. That's a heck of a lot
cheaper than $350 to repair and you keep your system original. If a CD
player is a desire, you can add aftermarket changers that require no
modification to the car but adding a power lead and a couple small holes (
that can be repaired easily) for the mounting screws.

The speaker amplifiers are available at mid america corvette and others
for about $100 per speaker. All you have to do is remove the speaker
box from each location and take them apart and replace the cards...

I have used the following company to repair my 1977 original radio with 8 track
player and my 1995 Bose radio. They seem pretty reasonable with their prices.
Give them a try and see what they come up with. They will give you an estimate
over the phone.
