Whichever side is still there after winter, in some cases :-)

OK, just realized in New Zealand they drive on the left, so no wonder
things didn't make any sense.

Wasn't aware people in New Zealand drive on the left side of the road,
so the current law there is the same as here, other than everyone
driving in the opposite lane.

Sigh. If you must: in NZ where we drive on the left, if you
are turning left at a green light (no arrow) then you must
give way to oncoming traffic who is turning right at a green
light (no arrow).

If your mind is used to considering driving on the right,
switch "right" for "left" and vice versa, in that paragraph.

In this case the traffic making the small tight turn gives way to
the traffic making the wide turn across potentially several lanes.

Wasn't aware you had corrected for difference in lane driving, Matthew
Russotto didn't so I thought you did the same.

Now that I understand what you are saying...that is nuts. Are you aware
of any other countries that do that? And how strict are the police at
enforcing using turn signals?
