I've broken the speed limit on a bike before. Near my house there is a
street that's about 1/3 mile long with no curves or stop signs, and
level (within a fraction of a percent) along its entire length.

At my maximum speed, I was passing about 2 houses every 3 seconds, and
I would estimate the average lot width there to be about 80 feet. So
my speed would have been around 36 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.

By the way, a good anaerobic exercise is riding a bike. A good aerobic
exercise is standing up while riding a bike. When you're trying to go
as fast as you can, this difference becomes very clear.

A former coworker told me he broke the speed limit in a 45 zone
on a bicycle. He had some help from gravity.

That's about the only way it'll ever happen in this part of Texas (unless the
rider's got a Cat 3 hurricane wind behind him/her, maybe). I've done that
every year I did the MS 150 ride to Austin, in the stretch through the state
parks southeast of Bastrop -- park road is signed at 30, but there are two
downhills on which everyone breaks that.
