Fuel loss on a 68' Bug
Howdy all,
I have a 1968 Bug, with a PICT-3 carb. Anyone want to trade for a PICT-1? :-) About 6 weeks ago I rebuilt the carb in hopes of getting better use of my fuel. I had some obvious leaks due to old gaskets (not to mention a lose sediment bowl bolt). At this point, I figure I am burning about twice the fuel I should be. Doing some quick guess-timating' I figure I am getting bewteen 11 and 15 miles to a gallon. Now that I have rebuilt the carb, replaced the filter(s), etc, I am left wondering why I still burn through fuel so quickly. Does anyone have some advice on where I could look? I have checked around for visible leaks and found none. Thanks gang, -Ray Haque |

It is almost impossible to rebuild a 34PICT3 carb.
The throttle shaft wears out the bush so bad that air leaks in and you can not make a correct idle adjustment. Buy a new 34PICT3 ( non smog) carb, unless you live in California, or get a 31PICT carb or a H30/31PICT carb. |

Actually, it is a 30 PICT-3. Sorry, I should have been more specific.
Also, I am missing the clamp that holds the oil-filled (stock) air filer onto the carb. Would that give me problems? It fits tightly 'enough' to hang on there just fine so I haven't worried too much about it. -Ray |
