Some people use MTL some use ATF, regardless of what is spec'd at the
time by BMW.

I used Redline D4 in my E36 and a year later the transmission failed.
That's just an anecdote - I can't say whether it was the oil or not.

May be anecdotal, but as I posted earlier there were concerns about tranny
failure in M5's with Redline products. No proof, but enough stories that I
didn't pursue putting in Redline or Royal Purple products in my M5.
