Road Trip!

Just got back from a GREAT road trip in my little old Jeep Cherokee.

Took off from work (near Raleigh-Durham Airport in NC) last Thursday
afternoon and headed west. As is my habit when not in a big hurry I
spent a lot of time on the old US highways and got to St. Louis early
Friday afternoon. Visited the Cahokia Indian mounds Friday and Saturday
went to the Arch and the old Chain of Rocks Bridge (Rt. 66).

If you are looking for a good cheap motel in St. Louis I HIGHLY
recommend something OTHER than the Super 8 on Target Drive!

Then I headed south and did another road thrash down US-61 and I-55
through Memphis and Clarksville on to Vicksburg. Did the tourist thing
in Vicksburg, fascinating, and if you want a nice place to stay in
Vicksburg I really liked the "Battlefield Inn", nice place, good food,
and it's not a cookie cutter chain motel. Any motel with a portrait of
General Robert E. Lee hanging over the fireplace in the lobby ain't just
another Motel 6!

From Vicksburg I drove down to Natchez and then headed up the Natchez
Trace Parkway to I-20, and then did the road thrash thing for home.

Six days, 2600 miles, and I throughly enjoyed it. If I had the time and
money I'd still be on the road... probably for the next six weeks.

I know I'm nuts, but it was fun!

So how about you folks, been on any good road trips lately, or have an
especially memorable trip you'd like to tell us about?

Sounded like fun! I grew up in southern Ark and sometimes it's nice to get
back, it really is beautiful. Wifey and I stayed in Natchez a few years ago
at the Monmouth, an inn converted from an old plantation. Dinner was in the
dining room of the mansion, wonderful. We were seated next to a young couple
who were pretty nice but talked about the Civil War ("When the Yankees came
down...") as if it had happened the previous month and they were still
bitter...

Heading out to Arizona this afternoon. Wanting to see all of
Hoover Dam, not just top-side. The elevators heading downstairs to the
generator room were down for their 10 year preventative maintenance last
time we were out there so we were not able to peruse that.
My wife will be celebrating her 29th wedding anniversary Sunday so
I thought we would go exploring. We are currently living in Iowa.

I am not sure how accurate this info is, but I was told that you cannot go
inside Hover Dam now since 9/11.

Anybody know if that is correct?

We went there after 9/11... I wasn't able to go through the tour
because they had a metal detector at the entrance... I was carrying
and wasn't sure if they recognized the TX CHL at that time... These
days, they do recognize it, but that doesn't mean that they'll
necessarily allow you to carry there... I guess they're afraid that
you will hijack the dam and take it somewhere else...

In Ohio, I guess they are afraid you will hijack outhouses in state parks.
You cannot enter ANY building owned or leased by the state while carrying
with a CHL and that includes restrooms or outhouses in state parks.

One of these days some idiot is going to go into one of those places
that bans handguns, including those carried by CHL holders, and said
idiot is going to shoot the place up and the CHL holder will get hurt.

If the legal gun owner had been able to keep his gun with him he might
have been able to so something about the idiot, but he couldn't carry
his gun.

Therefore he got hurt because those responsible for the building
wouldn't let him carry his gun.

As the property owner wouldn't let the honest citizen carry his gun they
are taking complete responsibility for his safety.

There will be a nasty lawsuit against the property owner, which they
should loose.

In my town that would be either the Post Office, the County Court House, or
the Miner's Tavern, which is in a building owned by the VFW.
