Eating and driving is as risky as using a phone at the wheel

By Ben Webster, Transport Correspondent

DRIVERS who eat and drink at the wheel are twice as likely to have a
crash, a study has indicated. They try to compensate for the
distractions of eating and drinking by driving more slowly and
carefully, but they are often unable to brake in time to avoid a
collision.
The risk is similar to using a handheld mobile phone while driving,
for which the fixed penalty is to be raised from a £30 to a £60 fine
plus three points.

Road safety groups said that the absence of any legislation or clear
guidance on the dangers of eating and drinking while driving
encouraged motorists to think it was safe.

The research found that a third of people sometimes used handheld
mobile phones while driving, but three quarters ate or drank at the
wheel.

The 26 participants in the study by Brunel University were asked to
drive a Ford Mondeo simulator on an urban route, once without eating
and once while eating from a bag of wrapped sweets or drinking from a
bottle of water. The simulator would show a pedestrian suddenly
stepping into the road and then measure the drivers’ responses.

Even though the participants tended to slow down while unwrapping a
sweet or unscrewing and raising the bottle to their lips, they were
still twice as likely to hit the pedestrian.

Plus the psychopaths also play with radios and CD players and read
books while driving and could care less if they crash into you. When
are people gonna wake up and realize that reckless drivers are
hundred times the threat that terrorists are.

You had to import your information from overseas? gagggghhhh...

Eating while driving...no argument, that's why alarm clocks are
adjustable and Interstate rest stops have picnic areas.

Water from bottle with screw-type lid...bad choice indeed; that's why
we have travel mugs and squeeze bottles.

Radios and CD players...mostly push button, any sane operator can run
them without taking the eyes off the road. Should not be a problem.

Reading books (I'll add road maps and newspapers and laptops): right,
totally insane. No argument.

Drivers do come with various skill sets; some can handle 100 mph quite
safely, and some do not belong on the road at 45 or even 4.5 mph.
That's why we have defensive driving.

BTW, what about drivers using a vehicle with a manual transmission?
Changing gears in those cases requires taking one hand off the wheel
for 1-2 seconds. Are those drivers reckless terrorists as well? No
need to answer that; the other readers can guess your opinion quite
well, thank you.

Happy motoring!!!

I'd have to disagree I'm afraid. They are a *momentary* distraction at least.
This can be minimised by the use of steering wheel or column mounted audio
switches or good ergonomic design of the ICE equipment. Big buttons are easier
to find and use than cutesy small ones that are sadly all too common. A classic
rotary 'volume control' ( may be digital ) is hugely easier to use than up-down
buttons.

GPS route finders are similarly criticised although they also have some clear
safety benefits too.

There's *no way* Loco Laura will buy that one despite the simple truth of the
matter - lol ! Nice try though. :~)

As long as that ? Do you drive a manual btw ?

Yes indeed. Driving a 4000 pound vehicle at 60 mph while holding a
burning stick in your mouth or hand is crazy. I hate smokers. They
are so disgusting.

Simple solution. Eliminate cars, eliminate drivers.
