Default 88’ D150 Tank

Howdy. I’ve been having problems with my old D150’s fuel tank.
Perhaps over time it has worn down, gotten weaker, but for some reason
it seems to crack under normal driving circumstances (small sticks,
ect.). I had gotten it "repaired" about 2 months ago....and as I
expected, the tar they had used to patch it would not be enough to
secure the whole tank.

I have a few questions to ask:

Is it uncommon for a plastic tank to be so weak, and to crack so
easily?

What is the size of my tank?

Is there someone whom makes metal tanks for the 88’ D150 3.9L (if so,
I can’t seem to find it AT ALL)?

Would a fuel cell in the tailgate be a wise choise?

I’ve looked and looked and looked for 2 days and could not find any of
these answers. I would just like to aquire some knowlege before I go
to any more repair shops.

Also, I have read about remedies suck as Sloshing sludge or similar
products, and I would much rather take the safer, and more permanent
replacement of a steel tank.

Any repairs, I am capable of doing, I am just a bit unfamiliar with
the gas tank portion of my truck. I am just tired of having to deal
with repairing this one part over and over.
