Worthy story. For a minute I thought it was going to be some of Obama's
b.s. on keeping tires inflated (along with getting regular tune ups -
hello - change the spark plugs?) as a super major step in solving the
oil crisis.

Bill if you want to post your OT political opinions (which 70% of the
population disagrees with) please keep them on the Toyota group where they
also don't belong.

Nah.

(1) This thread is marked OT. (2) 70%? I don't think so - that's more
like the number of people who know he's FOS on that point (and others).
The Germany blip was barely a blip, and he's well below the prior
baseline now anyway. Watch out for Hillary - she's insisting on being a
nominee at the convention. Wonder why. (3) So when's the last time I
posted on the Toyota ng? (4) Have a nice day.

Better to try saving on fuel, than simply saying "what the hell" I can
afford it and I'll continue driving my Hummer.

That's not the same as stating b.s. as facts like Obama did. Did he say
let's stop the false economy ethanol programs that are actually causing
more harm on several levels with little or no true benefit? No, because
that would be politically unpopular for him to say to his base which is
into "it doesn't matter if it really helps or hurts, the important thing
is that it makes us feel good".

Instead he brings up something that would have some much lesser positive
impact and then makes up b.s. statistics to support it. I'm not against
keeping tires properly inflated. I'm just against lying about the facts
supporting it so that it gets emphasized over other things that would
have a much greater positive impact. I'm for doing it all - use what we
have, use it wisely, and in the time we have, develop alternatives that
will help solve the problems and not make things worse (i.e., don't
subsidize what won't help and show numbers showing it's cheaper because
you fail to show the subsidization costs and leave out other undesirable
facts about it and strictly work off of the "feel good" factor).

Back to the original topic - back in the early 90's, my mother-in-law
had a car that she bought brand new and in 6 years had only driven it
26k miles. We had to replace all 4 tires still with lots of good tread
because they dry rotted.

Pointing out politician nonsense (energy policy = oil exploration isn't
necessary if you check your tire pressure) in a thread about tire
pressure sounds reasonable to me. Hey, I check my tire pressure every
weekend, just as I have for years, I guess that means I'm saved!

LOL! Thanks.

I started using those green = good/red = low gages you put in place of
the tire valve stem caps. I can tell at a glance walking around my cars
if the pressures are right. They are like $6-$9 at parts stores and
WalMart for sets of 4. They come in 36 and 32 psi. That's my personal
"feel good" policy.

You probably only see old (but new/never-used) tires that are also
odd-ball or low-profile tires that nobody ever wanted in the first
place.

I doubt that regular-sized tires sit on the shelf for more than 2 or 3
years max.

A tire that's sitting in a dark, dry storage shelf for a few years is
also not going to deteriorate like it was installed and pressurized on a
working vehicle, being exposed to ozone, UV light, potholes, etc, for
the same amount of time.

Its not that Liberals are ignorant, its just that they know so much that
isn't so.
