Default Set Pinion Factor

In addition to the high idle, my wife's 96 Sebring also has an issue with
the speedometer. Namely it doesn't work. All other gauges work, but not
the speedometer. I pulled the PCM off so I could get better access to the
EGR Pipe to fix it. I noticed a sticker on the back of the PDM. It said
"Speedometer will not work unless pinion factor is set."

A Google produced a few results which leads me to believe that the Pinion
Factor must be set by a tech.

Am I reading that right?

Thanx

when you say it doesnt work, does that mean it doesnt lite up on the dash?,
i would bet that is what the problem is, in which case the circuit board is
bad

Nope, it just doesn't move. It's not a digital readout. It's a needle.
The odometer & trip meter(which are digital) come on, but don't do
anything. Also, the cruise control indicator will come on when the CC is
turned on, but it doesn't work.

On the PLUS side, I DID fix the excessive idle!! Putting the EGR
Pipe on properly got the idle down to around 1200-1500. Still high, but
lots better than 3500-4500.

I am still getting Error codes:

15- (Intermittently) Vehicle Speed Sensor.
24- Throttle Position Sensor
35- Intake Air Circuit
46- Battery Overcharging.

But other than that (yuk yuk yuk) everything is fine!

I kinda figured the EGR leak was the reason why it was idling high, the code
15 is a faulty speed sensor/circuit, acually all these codes need to be
addressed, epecially the battery overcharge, if it is overcharging this
could lead to all kinds of drivability problems.

I have a 96 Grand Voyager that the Transmission was replaced with a
factory rebuild at 53k. About 25k later it was hesitating when you go
from park to drive. My transmission shop checked to see if any codes
were dropped. He noticed that the Pinion Factor was blank, so he set
it for the proper size tires 215/65r15. Now the speedometer is off. At
30mph read speed is 28. at 60mph read, speed 55mph. Why is it wrong
now? He cant un-program it, only change for a different size tire
which which would make it worse. Any Ideas?
