Are Cars With Right Side Steering Allowed in U.S.?
Are there any laws in the U.S. in general, and California specifically, that
forbid the importing of cars with the steering columns on the right side of the car? Steering Column location aside, if you are interested in a fuel efficient hybrid that is not sold in the U.S., would there be problems importing it, given the emissions and efficiency would exceed even California standards without modifications? What kind of approval processes are you required to go through, and what do those cost? -- Will |

Are Cars With Right Side Steering Allowed in U.S.?
I remember seeing right hand drive cars in the U.S. but that was many years ago. The process to get a new car certified for U.S. use can be very long and expensive. Some years ago I knew people in the military in Europe who would buy a new car and drive it long enough so that it could be imported into the U.S. as a used car and avoid all the certification hassle. I don't know if this loophole still exists.
