My '91 Chrysler Le Baron would turn itself off after a while - I don't
recall if it was time or distance based.

I realized it would turn itself off while exitting a freeway once -
the exit ramp was very long (it included an overpass), and I would be
merging to the right as soon as I hit the feeder, so I wanted to just
leave it on.
