1991 volvo 740

I just bought a '91 volvo 740. And it runs great, until you use about a
third of the gas, then all hell breaks loose. It doesn't start, the
engine turns and turns and turns, but until you get more gas in it, it
doesn't seem to want to start. I have the same problem when its hot
outside, which, for Arizona, is just about every day. I also have a
problem the gas guage. It does not correctly reflect how much gasoline
you actually have in your tank.any ideas on what I can do or should do?
anything would help, please.

Pour a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner into a full tank of
gasoline.

The problem is sulphur in the fuel that screws up the fuel level
sensor and other things. The Techron should get rid of it.

Volvo 740 and 240 use two gas pumps. One is inside the gas tank and the
second one
under the driver seat I beleive...(I am a 240 fan, not sure about the
740).
Your problem sounds like it is with the intank pump.
If you could test the gas pressure at the fuel pressure regulator that
could tell you something. Safetywise you need the proper equipment
because the pressure is high.

The other way is to test voltage at the intank fuel pump. The
electrical wire to that pump should be tested close to the tank
connection with a voltmeter while turning the key on. Then open the
filling cap and hear the pump working while someone else turns the
engine. Both pumps turn about 2 to 3 seconds to raise pressure to the
injectors.
If one can hear it working then a inside tank leak from the pump coud
be the problem. I am familiar with this with the 240.
If there is voltage but no noise then the intank pump could be dead.
