That is about the only way to find out what the problem really is. That
light comes on for a wide variety of reasons, and only one of which is a
loose gas cap.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few moments.

Happened to my '99 328i - took about 250 miles (nearly 2 weeks) to go off.
Has remained off ever since.
