Default Strange engine

When I start the engine of my 96 Metro in the morning, it sounds like a
tractor, lots of knocking coming from the engine.

But after a few minutes, its fine, and you don't hear anything. Someone
said
it might be the fuel pump gone.

This only happens if its been left all night, not when its only been
left
for a few hours.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Could be self-adjusting tappets - thingys that come between valves and
camshaft. See
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/HydraulicTappets.pdf They
expand under oil pressure provided by the oil pump so that no valve
adjustment is necessary.

Overnight the pressure drops and a gap appears as if the valves weren't
adjusted. At lower temperatures, when the oil is thick, it takes some time
to recharge them. If the sound is present more frequently at low
temperatures then this is probably the cause. Different grades of oil will
also affect recharge rate.

The service manual for my BMW with a M50 2.5l engine states that this is
not considered a problem unless the noise doesn't disappear after 15
minutes.

Bad Anti-Drainback valve in oil filter? Or oil viscosity is toast?
Cheap enough to try an oil/filter change with a quality filter...

I am surprised that a Metro has lasted this long. Most of them seem to have
been scrapped. A nastier example of a rusty Leyland [BL] model would be hard
to find barring the Morris Ital.
