Default transmission issue?

On my 2000 Mustang, the automatic transmission doesn't seem to
be smooth any more. It takes a while for it to get to 30-40miles
speed. It accelerates little faster if I increase the torque to
2500-3000RPM. Any idea what could be wrong?
Also the mpg seems to have reduced(to 17mpg city). I used to get
20-21mpg inside city. Is that normal?
