Default Moron of the Week

Well here is my moron of the week story -

I was on US-64 heading west at Rock Mount, NC around 1 pm yesterday
(Sunday). I am in the right lane doing a little over the speed limit
(65 mph speed limit). This part of the road is two lanes in each
direction. There is plenty of room to right for a break down lane, but
things are really tight on the left (there is a narrow paved shoulder,
a little dirt shoulder, and a hard steel guardrail to the left). Uber
driver in a 2 Door Civic is carving through traffic. He was probably
doing 15 over when he passed me. In the left lane is an Elantra,
probably doing 5 over in the process of catch and passing a truck that
was going the speed limit (or maybe a little lower). Uber driver never
slows down, whips to the right lane, shoots past the
Elantra, then literally squeezed in between the Elantra and the truck.
The Elantra driver has to hit the left shoulder to avoid a collision. I

can swear I saw parts fly off the Civic as he shot through the gap
(definitely something long and solid was in the air, may have been off
the Elantra or from the shoulder). The Civic never slows. The truck
never notices anything and keeps going. The Elantra driver is about to
hit the guardrail and then in an act of stupidity locks up his brakes
(huge dust cloud). Next he jerks the damn car back onto the pavement.
At this point I was sure I was toast. I pictured the Elantra going
broadside in front of me. So I started braking hard. The Elantra
swerves into my lane, but the driver somehow manages to straighten he
car out without hitting anything. Meanwhile the Civic is gone.

This is a perfect case of a jerk Uber driver almost getting someone
killed while blithely speeding off. If the idiot in the Civic had
waited 20 seconds, the Elantra would have finished his pass and we all
would have had a more pleasant day. One last irony, about 10 mile down
the road, I caught and passed the Civic (if it wasn't the same car, it
was it's twin). The idiot driver (a white guy) was yakking away on
this cell phone, although how
he could hear anything over the fart can exhaust is a mystery to me. It

was louder in my car than my radio. The guy in the Elantra had taken
the first exit after the near death experience - probably to clean his
shorts.

The Elantra driver was micropassing. Drivers must yield to faster
traffic in the passing lane.

It's MFFY to block traffic for 20 seconds.

That's another problem, but micropassers cause traffic jams and decrease
road safety as the traffic bunches up behind them. I've had cars come
up in the passing lane behind me that were going much faster than my
passing speed, and I usually accelerate to finish my pass and move over.
If I don't want to drive that fast, I move into a gap between the cars
that I was passing, wait for the faster car to pass, and then finish
passing. My passing speeds are usually 20-50 over the speed of the
slower traffic, depending on how many cars that I need to pass. If the
traffic is only slightly slower than my set speed, I usually slow to the
speed of traffic instead of passing.

sounds like a whole confederacy of dunces there... both the Civic
driver and the Elantra driver should have been paying more attention.

Your story is a perfect example of how the dangerous Elantra driver nearly
caused a horrible wreck because he or she clearly did not adequately check
his or her mirrors before initiating the pass of the truck and
inconveniencing the driver of the Civic. As at least four or five expert
drivers here in r.a.d. will explain to you in no uncertain terms, the single
worst thing a driver can do is to block the left lane at any moment and for
any length of time, even while passing, so the Civic driver had no resort to
do what he or she did.

After all, the drivers driving the fastest and making the most lane changes
are obviously the ones whose time is most valuable -- this is why they are
in the biggest hurry.

I'm just disappointed you didn't get the plate for the Elantra driver so the
authorities could suspend his or her license for Criminal Failure To Avoid
Delaying A Speeding Driver. Therefore, you were complicit in this travesty
of road justice and you should be ashamed.

<snip>

The four or five expert drivers here in r.a.d., had they been driving
the Elantra would have never been in such a situation. When I initiate
a pass, the opportunity to pass me on the right and cut in front of me
exists anywhere from 3 to 5 seconds.

Exactly! You've "never been in such a situation"! Which is why I'm glad
you're here. We need more experts like you!

Obviously, the Elantra driver should have anticipated that the Civic driver
was going to want that lane back, even after swerving out of it to pass
drivers in the other lane. I mean, when one is going to pass another
vehicle, one must not only make sure there is not another vehicle
approaching in the passing lane, but that there are *no* approaching
vehicles in *any other lanes* that may possibly want that lane.

Sure, this may involve a little mind reading, but to an expert driver, it
isn't difficult. Those 20 seconds were clearly *very* important to the
Civic driver -- he or she must not be delayed. Period.

Wow. It sounds like you know what you're doing. To bad most other
drivers aren't that smart.

It's not an issue of inconvenience; it's an issue of safety. You don't
understand that difference? Thankfully we're not on the same stretch
of road; we've got enough moron drivers around here.

The single worst thing you can do is cause traffic to bunch up. You
know, from the physics law that states "two objects can't occupy the
same space at the same time?" Or were you asleep in that class, too?

>After all, the drivers driving the fastest and making the most lane changes

Wow, now that is really stupid. Do you live in Colorado by any chance?

My guess is that had one of the four or five "expert" drivers as you
refer to them seen this situation, they would have done the
intelligent thing and started de-acceleration before rice boy cut off
the Elantra; waiting to the last minute to apply brakes can get you
killed. That's a hint, because it's apparent you haven't got a clue.

It seems to me that the Elantra driver did everything right. He signaled and
moved to the left to pass a slower vehicle. He was doing so in a reasonable
manner. Not only was the driver of the Civic an LLB (Left Lane Bully), he
almost got me and/or the guy in the Elantra killed. I cannot believe you
would blame the Elantra driver for driving in a reasonable manner. I can't
see where you or anyone else can expect people to grossly violate the law so
that you can violate it in an even more gross manner. As far as I know, no
state has a rule that would require the Elantra driver to drive 15 or 20 mph
over the speed limit to pass a car that could be passed in a more reasonable
manner (he was already passing the truck with a closing rate somewhere
between 5 and 10 mph).

When I was younger, I had a Highway Patrol Officer stop me and accuse me of
doing 60 in a 55 while passing a car on a two lane road. He reamed me out,
but in the end let me go (I asked him how he had clocked me...).He told me
in no uncertain terms that the law had no exception that allowed people to
speed in order to complete a pass. If you can't pass them at the speed
limit, you shouldn't make the pass. Of course I though the whole argument
was total BS, but I can't find any exception in the laws (NC laws) that
allow people to speed to make a pass, even on a two lane road. Seems like
there ought to be some sort of definition of a reasonable passing speed that
allows for quicker passing, especially on 2 lane roads.

And the Civic cutting through traffic and almost causing an accident wasn't
doing the MFFY thing? The Civic was hiding behind other cars when the
Elantra started his pass. The Civic driver was obviously not really in a
hurry, since I caught him later on. He was just bullying his way through
moderate traffic. I doubt if the Elantra driver even had time to react to
the Civic before the moron tied to zoom pass him on the right.

Nobody was pressing the Elantra until the Civic rocketed past us all. I
would have caught the truck the Elantra was passing in another minute and
passed him as well. The Elantra was definitely going faster than the general
flow of traffic (which was at the speed limit or maybe 5 over). After I got
past the truck, I ran 5 over, and only a couple of cars passed me in the
next 25 miles. Before the episode with the Civic, the Elantra had passed me
and was definitely moving away.

50 miles an hour over the slower traffic on a four lane road??????????? The
slower traffic in this case was doing something between 60 and 65 mph in a
65 mph zone. I can't believe you would pass them at 85 to 115 mph in a 65
mph zone. And if you would, then you are probably one of those people
responsible for leaving a trail of accidents in their wake. Your closing
speed on other traffic would be far to high. I can understand the idea of
passing as quickly as possible on a two lane road where you right have to
deal with on coming traffic, but going 50 mph over traffic in an adjacent
lane going in the same direction seems like you are asking for trouble.

It seems to me that people who feel that everyone should clear out of their
way so they can speed are the ultimate MFFY drivers. But then I am old and
would like to live to be even older. Driving like an idiot seems to be a
good way to die sooner.

It doesn't take expert advice; it takes common sense. Or perhaps for
some it does take expert advice.

The elantra driver should have waited for rice boy to pass, or passed
with diligence.

Expert driver? How about a conscious driver? Do you have difficulties
judging the relative speed of other vehicles? When I'm driving, I
focus on what's ahead of me, but I'm also aware of what's behind me,
as well as what's on either side of me. Considering I like to have an
awareness as close as possible to 360 degree coverage, I notice
vehicles approaching me from the rear LONG before they catch up to me.
Judging their speed to that of any traffic around them allows me to
access their relative velocity, which in turn leads me to alter my
driving pattern in preparation for any possible requirement for
defensive driving maneuvers.

You DON'T drive this way? Please don't breed.
