Why doesn't Detroit make a car BUILT for low speeds

We had a '73 VW Beetle (not a Super Beetle, but a plain Beetle) that would
top out at 73 MPH. We also had (I think) a '71 that I saw on 85 once and it
was still climbing.

Interesting that you make this post and one other similar post AFTER
there have been posts with examples of this...

If the auto manufacturers thought they could sell enough of a speed
limited car, you would see more of them on the road.

Oh don't give us that crap. That might be true if genuine competition
existed in the industry but with only two domestic manufacturers that
is clearly not the case. The auto industry makes billions every year
replacing and repairing crash damage and that's why they make fast cars
and glamorize fast driving in their commercials.

You actually believe car companies MAKE money off of crashes? You don't
think they spend millions and millions on both in-house attorneys and
outside counsel defending all of the lawsuits they're hit with as a
result of these crashes, alleging defective manufacture or design? And
that's not counting the millions and millions in settlements they pay
out every year.

And do you believe the people who think their car contributed to the
crash they were in go out and buy a car from the same manufacturer?

I have some advice for you - as you say to others: THINK. I know its
hard for you, but give it a shot!
