Default Xenon bulbs

Anyone replaced the standard headlight bulbs with Xenon bulbs in an alfa 156
2002 (old style exterior, new interior)? Any problems? Ebay are listing a
pair for £11 with delivery.

Same question about the sidelights - anyone replaced these with Xenon or LED
bulbs? Any trouble?

In fact, are Xenon bulbs really that much brighter / better?

Personally I wouldn't bother. I replaced my repeaters with clear lenses and
amber bulbs. Only slight fiddle is when I dropped the socket into the
wing......

These are *not* Xenon discharge lamps which come standard on a number of
cars now. They are merely ordinary halogen lamps tinted to look like them.

They are advertised and described as Xenon bulbs...

Look like xenon bulbs, or is it just clever wording to con us?

Xenon is one of the halogen gases that can be used to fill halogen bulbs,
and there is no reason to assume that these aren't xenon filled. But it is
true that they aren't HID (high intensity discharge) lamps as they would
require different electrics including ballasts, but I don't think the poster
was thinking they were.

You can buy after market Xenon conversion kits for Alfa's though.
500-600 euro incl. mounting.
Just Google with "xenon conversion"

Exactly. They are Not Xenon.
If you want to know about Xenon
www.XENONDEPOT.com
The FAQ page is useful if you want to know about Xenon
and what and how different headlights work.
It might be handy to read before shopping elsewhere.

Erm, yes the *are* Xenon bulbs, in as much as they are halogen style bulbs
filled with Xenon gas.

What they are *not* is Xenon *discharge* bulbs which work on a totally
different principle.

If I may conclude - these bulbs are Xenon filled, so technically can be
called Xenon headlight bulbs, but they are not what we generally refer to as
Xenon headlights. Xenon headlights require replacement clusters, different
wiring and give a HID look. These ebay advertised Xenon bulbs are just
ordinary halogen bulbs filled with Xenon gas. You get what you pay for - £12
on ebay for Xenon filled bulbs, which are brighter than the normal bulbs and
give a HID look. Some are tinted, but not all. However for about £300-400
you can get a Xenon *discharge* conversion kit to give a true HID light
(High Intensity Discharge).
