new distributor Q
Hi all.
A couple weeks back, in one operation, I replaced my Dist., the cap & rotor, wires, plugs, and Crank sensor. All because it was difficult to start, then wouldn't start. Right away I had a shudder, or periodic buck. I knew something was amis. After a few days, I replaced the cap & rotor, plugs and wires with the old ones. Still have the problem. I can't replace the dist., since I turned in the core. The old crank sensor just plain doesn't start. Now I have a small backfire too. Could my distributor be one notch, or spline off? I heard the computer can compensate somwhat. Is it worth me exploring this? I hate to buy another dist., or crank sensor, since each is about $70. Thanks all, Dave Lee |

It is worth checking. When #1 piston is on TDC on the compression
stroke, the rotor will point just past where #1 plug wire should be on the cap. Hi Dave,
You've been fighting this since February first, I would take it to anyone with an oscilloscope, and they'll tell you what it is in about ten seconds: http://www.billhughes.com/oscilloscope.jpg I can feel a loose wire at the coil that fires every time it opens. This I understand. But I live in a rural area, and arranging for rides is a
painin the ^%$. I have another vehicle I use, so I can tinker with this at me leisure. I seem to correct a problem, just to be faced with another. I just can't shake the feeling that this current problem is related somehow to something I replaced. Bill, what do you think of the distributor being off one spline? Possible? Or impossible? Hi Dave,
The quick way to find out is to follow Mike's suggestion, pull number one plug, seal hole with finger, and feel for compression stroke, and stop cranking with balancer at top dead center, pull cap and rotor should be pointed at number one mark on cap, or it's ignition wire. You got the plug wires connected up properly and in the right order? It
can stil run and have a plug wire going to the wrong cylinder. No, the wires are correct. As well as the little wire from the new dist. to
