I've run into a few stations that have a $50 limit on gas purchases. I
figure that was to prevent charge backs in case of someone using a stolen
credit card. I had to use two cards once to fill up my Expedition ($50 on
one card, $5 or so on the other). Once I know a station has a limit, I avoid
it. Even my Thunderbird can hold $50 worth of gas if I run it really low. I
think the most I had to buy at one time for the Expedition was around $75. I
also once had a problem with a station declining my credit card becasue I
tried to make too many purchases the same day (I was filling up my car, a
farm truck, my Mom's car, and my son's car) over a period of a few hours.
When I showed up with my Mom's car, my credit card was declined. I switched
cards and everything was fine.

I wonder if the $50 limit applies to cash purchases.

It's actually worse. You'd have to use three 20 dollar bills to make
the same $50 purchase.

Or travelers checks?

There has to be some places that are willing to have larger than $50
transactions for gasoline. I pulled into a station in Pasco, Washington
once, refueled, and was out of there and all the while the guy in this
HUUUUUUGE motorhome on the other side of the pump was pumping and pumping
and pumping..... When I left I think his bill indicated on the pump was
some $200 or so and climbing, and that was when that station was still
selling gas for about $1.35 a gallon.
