Buying Advice GT
Back in 1999 when I bought my 146 Junior I seem to remember spending
some time haggling to get the price right. Now 93000 miles later I am being sorely tempted by the special edition GT Cloverleaf. Although there is nothing major wrong with my 146 and it is in daily use it seems to be worth only around £500 as a trade in. I have cash available to purchase GT and my local independent has offered to sell my 146 from his forecourt so am looking at ways of getting best cash discount. Am focussing on GT Cloverleaf 1.8 TS list price £19k. Have looked at Broadspeed .com and their price is 17.3k and their fee is £300 so car costs 17.6k. It looks like they have nothing in stock so one has to wait 12 weeks for delivery. Then tried Askaprice.com who allegedly have sellers lining up for my custom. This turned out to be Perrys of Aylesbury who phoned me and asked what price I wanted to pay. I said as near to £17k as poss to which they replied that they did not have nearly enough commission in the sale to do that. When some months ago I looked at the GT Blackline and asked for a cash discount I was advised that special editions did not have enough commission to offer a discount. Is there anyone who can advise me what price I might achieve for this intended purchase ? How much does an Alfa dealer make on a vehicle sale ? Can anyone recommend Broadspeed or another broker ? All advice gratefully received with thanks. John Chapman |

Heh. Depends on the mileage you're doing and how much you rely on the car, I suppose. I'm looking at coming out of a nice cuddly company car scheme where I can thrap the car to death and just chuck it at a dealer to fix it when it breaks. Which it has, admittedly, only done once. Doing 35k miles / year and *needing* my car, the fragility of the Sillyspeed does worry me. The GT is a bit over my budget, too - but I could possibly stick it on a 4 year finance deal and trade it after 2 or 3 years. -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' www.italiancar.co.uk - Ducati 750SS - Hongdou GY200 Alfa 75 TSpark - Alfa 156 TSpark - B6 Passat 2.0TDI SE |

Alfa don't seem to list the Selespeed 'box as available on their official web site anymore...perhaps that tells you something! By the way, anybody know when/what is going to replace the GT? I'm underwhelmed with my Audi and am thinking of changing early next year. Regards Ross |
